OUT OF THE BOX AND ALONG “THE SUPERSTRING” THIS FRIDAY

Since the establishment of AFU, knowledge sharing program other than the ones related to agriculture has seldom taken place in the campus. And while some of you might argue that the discussion of any extra subject matter is hardly required in a purely technical university, it must be taken into mind that stepping out of the box undoubtedly enhances other aspects of our overall understanding of the world and life and also provides a spoon of refreshment in our monotonous college life.

AgriYouthNepal conducted Friday sharing program, as usual, this Friday(5th august) on the topic “the Superstring theory” which was dynamically presented by Mr. Anmol Kandel( BVSc and AH 7th sem.) in the Agronomy Seminar hall. This topic is largely concerned with Physics and the primary information that was shared was that every matter in this universe, even the fundamentals like electron, proton, neutron are composed of even more basic elements called strings(waves). A large group of participants were present which included our respected asst. prof. Mr. Ankit Koirala and other senior members(almuni) of AgriYouthNepal.

The program was conducted in two broad sessions: the presentation phase, where Mr. Anmol Kandel brilliantly presented his knowledge regarding the history of physics in relation to the evolution of superstring theory (and the theory itself, of course), and the discussion/sharing phase, where the participants and the presenter indulged themselves in sharing information and clearing queries related to the subject matter. The program which started at 4.15 am approximately lasted an hour.

Many of you might find this topic useless and vague, or even an unnecessary burden to the brain but think again….do you want all of your mind to think only of a same subject(agriculture or veterinary) the rest of your life and never come out of this imaginary box for a small fraction of time to broaden your universal knowledge??

THIS FRIDAY IS YOURS!

Rejuvenation of “AYN  Friday sharing program” was marked by a successful episode  held on  29th July,2016 on the topic  “Glimpses of ongoing research on Papaya (Carica Papaya) var. Red Lady on Chitwan condition. The  presenter was Mr. Santosh Kalauni, Msc. Ag, Department of Horticulture.

The program was conducted in the  special presence of Assistant Professor Bishal Shrestha from Department of Horticulture, AFU. The purpose of the program was to focus  on the glimpses of the ongoing research on Papaya (Carica Papaya) var. Red Lady on Chitwan condition. Presentor Mr. Kalauni  described about the ongoing research especially on three topics

  • Effect of Defoliation & Thinning on the quality and yield of Papaya.
  • Effect of Foliar Spray of Micronutrients (B and Zn) on growth, yield and quality of Papaya.
  • Effect of different packaging materials on the post-harvest self-life of papaya var. Red Lady.

Specific objectives of his research is to improve the fruit quality by managing the orchard scientifically, thus reducing the spread of disease and insects. He shared that problems were on the packaging materials, storage and transportation .The researcher also emphasized on strengthening the quality and yield of papaya of var. Red lady by covering the large market area and ensuring the better production.

A short discussion session was held after the presentation session where different people pitched their ideas. Around 50 people were present in the program. The program ended with the end of discussion session  at 5 p.m.

Through Friday sharing  AYN provides you a really  nice platform to share your ideas . Lets share ! This Friday is yours!!

The presenter, Dhiraj Bhatta started his presentation on the topic ‘Sustainable Agriculture for Sustainable future’. He started his presentation with ‘Green Revolution‘ and ended with a question ‘Can we realize the dream of evergreen revolution?‘. He shared about organic farming, permaculture, tillage systems, effects of conventional farming and chemical inputs to the soil and the crops. The presentation depicted the hazards of chemical fertilizers and pesticides which are excessively being used in modern agriculture. It also gave some alternative measures of plant nutrition, plant protection ,use of farm power which may be helpful in making agriculture self sustaining. After that there was discussion session where the participants shared their ideas and vision to increase the food production and some of them raise their queries about organic farming and the use of chemical fertilizers. The program ended with a conclusion that we can’t shift completely towards organic farming completely stopping the use of chemical fertilizers but we can make the vision of sustainable agriculture come true by reducing the use of chemical fertilizers bit by bit.
